June 1970: The Class of 1970 granted its request to keep the gates "permanently open as a symbol of the University's openness to the local and worldwide community." Engraved on the east pillar, south facade is the dedication "1970 - Together for Community".
July 1970: Local papers voice concern over the increase in pedestrian traffic on the front lawn now that the gates have been opened.
June 1988: Marching out the gate at Commencement instituted as a permanent tradition.
