{Curator's note: Another great instance of alumni "crowdsourcing" of museum artifacts.}

On this past New Year’s Eve some very long-time and close friends came to join us for dinner and she brought along what I vaguely recognized as a beer stein. Her late father kept it for years on his desk at home to house, not unexpectedly, pens and pencils. Since he was a Yale graduate she is uncertain how it came to him but thinks perhaps an Uncle or Great-Uncle went to Princeton. She was cleaning out a few things and thought quite correctly that I would enjoy having it. So now it sits on my desk.

Although the lettering is worn, it is sufficiently legible as “Eighty Seven,” presumably, 1887. The bottom is marked with the Mettlach factory marking of Villeroy & Boch.
