The suffrage march turned ugly and violent, as mobs of angry, drunken men attacked the women and policemen assigned to protect the marchers stood by and laughed. It was such a debacle that a congressional hearing was held after the march. It was a horrifying experience for the women, but in the end, the attention it garnered served to advance the suffrage cause.

The Library of Congress has an excellent summary of the march and its aftermath.
